As of Wine 1.5.1 Borderlands works again!

WINE SETTINGS:
No overrides were required to run the game

GAME SETTINGS:
No special game settings were required to play. To disable opening logos open /home/USERNAME/My Games/Borderlands/Willow Game/Config/WillowEngine.ini and delete items under [FullScreenMovie]

RUNNING THE GAME:
On first launch Borderlands will install redistributables – you shouldn’t have any problems here. The game launched in 640×480 resultion first time though I was able to change the resolution from the Options menu without a problem. Mouse control was not very smooth for me… but the game was still playable with some tweaking.

Multiplayer appears to work just fine as well :)

PROBLEMS NOTED:

  • losing app focus sometimes freezes the game
  • sometimes the game does not launch properly = have to kill then restart – though this may just be me… please post a comment if you are having similar issues…

    OS: GameDrift (Ubuntu 10.10)
    Wine version: 1.3.26
    GPU: ATI x1550
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 @ 2.2GHz
    Memeory: 2 GB ram

    What worked and what didn’t:
    Installed using given verb
    Steam installed without a hitch
    Borderlands download is commencing.

I have not run this yet, but a thought comes to mind. This game uses Nvidia’s PhysX engine, and yet the verb doesn’t install the winetrick for PhysX. Is this intentional?

Okay, I finally got Steam installed successfully on my Arch through winetricks.

So, what I have to do to install Borderlands manually? It would be good if you explain to us the installation progress step by step.

and how to install the d3dx9 and vcrun2008 in specific prefix using winetricks?

    Thanks..

Whenever I attempt to launch this game I get “This game is currently unavailable please try again at another time.”

The first thing I tried was verifying the installed files, I then made sure my files weren’t read only and have tried installing the game both in its own prefix and in the main .wine prefix. Unfortunately I was unable to get Borderlands to launch under any of these conditions.

I’m running wine 1.3.24 which seems to have the best all around performance and compatibility with steam games from what I’ve found and given that you were able to get the game running with 1.3.20 it shouldn’t be an issue unless there have been some large updates to Borderlands itself.

Can I get a little help please?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I am having problems running borderlands, I am running Ubuntu 12.04 with an Nvidia graphics and wine 1.5.15. I started the installation with winetricks borderlands_steam, but then had to shut down the computer before it finished downloading borderlands, so the following morning I resumed the download on steam and let it finish. I am let steam install its first run dependencies, and have installed over winetricks d3dx9 + vcrun2008 manually ( as winetricks wont run the verb as it is installed), but when I tried to run borderlands, it refuses to run, saying to install Direct x 9, which is installed.
Any idea how I can fix this?

try deleting the wine prefix and installing steam + borderlands… try running the game. You may not need the winetricks overrides.
Install winetricks vcrun2008 if you have any problems.

Then try running – install winetricks d3dx9 if still problems – though it should run now without the winetricks overrides.

I am having major problems I have tried ubuntu 12.10 and mint 14. I have tried wine 1.5 and 1.4 it installs correctly through steam but when I run it I get no text in the steam overlay(steam has text outside the game) and I get negative graphics behind the options menu. When I go to start a game it crashes.

    • admin says:

The Steam Overlay Renderer does not work well with all games… you should actually disable the in-game overlay in Wine libraries. The overlay causes more problems than it’s worth. That said, it is getting better with each wine release.
