The game works great on my Chakra 64-bit installation.
I'm running it via PlayOnLinux with Wine 1.5.20 (32-bit).
The ONLY bottleneck seems to be my laptop's CPU, which is an AMD Athlon II P340 Dual-core. My graphics chip is an ATI Mobility Radeon 5470, which seems quite good for these kind of games.
Wish the proprietary driver was better, though...not that the free-source driver is better, by any standards. :P

There has been an update on this, many Games for Windows games either don't use the DRM module, or have been patched to no longer use it. (Developers don't seem to be too keen on the fact that it doesn't support Windows XP either, apparently.) There is a Replacement "dummy" module for the Games for Windows "Live" module that is the most common module used, as it provides multiplayer functionality.

try deleting the wine prefix and installing steam + borderlands... try running the game. You may not need the winetricks overrides.
Install winetricks vcrun2008 if you have any problems.

Then try running - install winetricks d3dx9 if still problems - though it should run now without the winetricks overrides.

Hi,
I am having problems running borderlands, I am running Ubuntu 12.04 with an Nvidia graphics and wine 1.5.15. I started the installation with winetricks borderlands_steam, but then had to shut down the computer before it finished downloading borderlands, so the following morning I resumed the download on steam and let it finish. I am let steam install its first run dependencies, and have installed over winetricks d3dx9 + vcrun2008 manually ( as winetricks wont run the verb as it is installed), but when I tried to run borderlands, it refuses to run, saying to install Direct x 9, which is installed.
Any idea how I can fix this?

Running Debian Squeeze, Wine 1.4 (from the Ubuntu repository, as the Debian Wine version is more or less ancient), ATI 3650 graphics with fglrx driver (3D acceleration enabled).

Have installed the game as per the instructions above, which went fine (winetricks automatically disabled gameoverlayrender, and installed corefonts), but when playing the game there are portions of the graphics missing, most noticably the left hand part of the menu line, as well as status and START GAME fields during play set-up.

Initially the whole menu line was missing, but setting the sizes of nofile in /etc/security/limits.conf to larger values (which controls the maximum number of open files available) brought in the right hand part (MENU, HELP etc), as per a suggestion I found on the 'net. There are probably other elements not quite right either, thought I'd try to get this right to start with.

Tried installing the Tahoma fontas per another suggestion (after the game was installed) but that didn't help.

I'm rather stumped at this point, and I haven't seen anyone else who seems to have this particular problem. Steam seems to run fine, with all fonts visible, etc.

Yes, I tried at "low" graphics also, no difference. I'm with Ubuntu 12.04 and with i5 processor and Nvidia 330GM video with 1GB memory. I'm playing World of Warcraft with no problems, so I thought this should be an easy one :)

So - I'll try using different desktop and see if some process can be killed and make the game run smoother. And also - I'll see if the things will change if I clean my laptop, cause I have the laptop for two years and it hasn't been cleaned by now. And it's summer time here and the heat the laptop exudes is huge ... so maybe the graphics card gets overheated and that's why it gets slower.

I'll post when have some results ;)

I'm having problems, I have TF2 installed fine under Linux Mint but when I go to run the game all i get is the preparing to launch game screen which eventually disappears to be replaced by nothing. I can continue to try doing this and steam recognises I'm doing so because it updates its last played to today but the game will not launch. I also have this problem with half-life 2 episode 2, but not half-life 2 or episode one (which work fine). Any ideas?
