SGOL member Wulfe has found a solution to the “Texture Compression Disabled” error when launching LFD2 -and probably applies to other games as well.
Check his comments on LFD2 post here http://www.steamgamesonlinux.com/left-4-dead-2/#comment-1088
This isn’t specifically related to Linux gaming – but thought I’d post the solution to this problem as it took me over an hour to find the right switch = wasted my time searching in Google!
Basically whenever the power cable was plugged into the laptop my gaming graphics slowed to unplayable… but when unplugged the games run fine… the opposite of what one would expect!
I did find a lot of posts saying to set the Windows laptop video power settings to Maximum performance etc – but that didn’t work – others said it was the adapter = NOT!
So after trying everything on every forum, I finally went into the NVIDIA control panel as a last resort and LO AND BEHOLD! = a separate setting for Power Management Mode under 3D settings… set that to Maximum and all fixed… sheesh, should have gone there first and not bothered with Google…
It appears the NVIDA graphics chip ignores the Windows power settings in favour of it’s own settings.
Hopefully this article will help others find the solution that worked for me = fixing the problem of slower performance and low framerates when their power cable is plugged in…
Game On!

Fun platformer / puzzle with some unique gameplay.
WINE SETTINGS:
No wine overrides were required. Windows version in winecfg set as Windows XP
RUNNING THE GAME:
Vessel installed Direct X on first launch which completed fine. The game took awhile to launch to the home menu – so be patient. From there the game appeared to run fine – though was stuttering a bit until I turned off Vertical Sync. After that the game ran perfectly.
PROBLEMS NOTED:
Some game stuttering fixed by turning off Vsync

Isometric alien shooter. Nothing too original – but fun if you have time to waste…
WINE SETTINGS:
No wine overrides required. The game would not launch unless I removed all overrides from libraries – though left the steam overlay rendering override active. Windows version set as Windows XP
RUNNING THE GAME:
The game launched minimised for me – clicking the app in the panel opened it and everything ran pretty well. A little graphical stuttering when lots of explosions / effects – though tweaking graphics might help (turn off post processing etc)
PROBLEMS NOTED:
Some game stuttering – long load times
NOT TESTED:
Multiplayer co-op mode
