Steam Games on Linux

WINE SETTINGS:
As of Wine 1.3.20 MouseWarpOverride is not required. Run in full screen / no virtual desktop. Set OffscreenRenderingMode = fbo. Installed winetricks d3dx9 + vcrun2005. I ticked box next to Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows in winecfg Graphics tab.

Disabling “MouseSmoothing” by adding wine library override openal32=native might help make your mouse smoother… worth testing.

RUNNING THE GAME:
The game launches to full screen. You may need to refocus the window to regain keyboard input (alt+tab). I have played a couple of off-line matches in single player with bots – though lagging required dropping graphics settings to a minimum + reducing number of bots to get smother gameplay on my system.

MULTIPLAYER:
I had to disable my iptables firewall to connect to any servers – regular servers without ‘mutators’ or ‘stock mutators included in official dlc packs (e.g. Titan + Bonus Pack 1) seem to connect and play fine… though other servers with non-stock mutators fail after being unable to open / install downloaded game file ‘KatPack’ – this appears to be connected to additional content / maps / custom character files / mods etc… You will probably have to manually download and install them to play on these servers.

NOTE: if you are running UT3 in it’s own wineprefix you will have to specify it’s location and tell wine to run the executable in that prefix – it’s usually something like:

# env WINEPREFIX=”/home/<username>/.local/share/wineprefixes/<GAMEPREFIX>” wine installername.exe

I did download and install the UT3 Bonus Pack 1 without problems.

In case you need it : UT3 Titan Pack – though this already comes with Steam Black Edition download

WINETRICKS .verb INSTALLER NOTES: [general installer help here]
The ut3_black_sgol_steam.verb installer will install Steam + UT3: Black in it’s own wineprefix + installs Steam specific workarounds + sets dsoundhw=Emulation + OffscreenRenderingMode = fbo.  You may need to check these again after install using winetricks… if any problems with the SGOL .verb installer please do post a comment.
