Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition

On November 21, 2010, in playable games, by Necron99

STATUS: playable Steam Store Page: click here
Wine Version: 1.3.6
Wine Virtual Desktop: yes Full-screen: NO

WINE SETUP:
In order to get Deus Ex: GOTYE to run I had to set Wine to use a virtual desktop before launching Steam.

IN-GAME SETTINGS:
I had to run the game using Direct3D for video drivers at 1024 x 768 resolution, otherwise the game was unplayable on my system.

RUNNING THE GAME:
The game first launches with a configuration app – I ended up selecting Direct3D as others seemed to cause problems with rendering. The game launched into a 640×480 window and I could only increase it to 1024 x 768 before running into problems such as blank screens. Once started though, Deus Ex plays fine within the desktop window.

Titan Quest

On November 20, 2010, in playable games, by Necron99

STATUS: playable Steam Store Page: click here
Wine Version: 1.3.6 Run: from within Steam + Wine virtual desktop
Windowed: YES Full-screen: NO

WINE SETTINGS:
Use a virtual desktop, it should be larger than your game resolution.

IN-GAME SETTINGS:
I set all settings to high with full-screen mode, though this runs within the virtual desktop window. You can also set the game to run in Windowed mode. I run Titan Quest in 1440×900 so my virtual desktop is set to 1680×1050. As there is no direct option to turn shadows off in-game, I had to manually edit the game  config file to turn shadows off and stop the major artifacting with my ATI card. The configuration settings should be in your Linux home /My Games/Titan Quest/Settings/options.txt

RUNNING THE GAME:
The game loads up to the starting screen and movies. Setting up a character and launching a new game went smooth. Though as mentioned there was a lot of artifacting on the 3d graphics / Shadows (using ATI Drivers). Game “ground tiles” were noticeably square though this is a minor issue for me and the game is playable. The character avatar in the character sheet / inventory still shows the shadow artifacting even though I have shadows turned off in the main config file.

MULTIPLAYER:
Not yet tested

PROBLEMS NOTED:
Sometimes I can’t escape opening videos + some graphics artifacting occurs in-game.

Tank Universal

On November 20, 2010, in playable games, by Necron99

STATUS: playable Steam Store Page: click here
Wine Versions: 1.3.6 Run: from within Steam + Wine virtual desktop
Windowed: YES Full-screen: no

WINE SETTINGS:
With this game you have to set the virtual desktop to be larger than the WINDOWED game resolution. I set mine to 1680×1050 and run the game in 1280×1024 – widescreen is not supported in this game.

IN-GAME SETTINGS:
Running the game from within Steam brings up the Tank Universal launcher panel. Select your resolution and be sure to run the game in Windowed Mode.

RUNNING THE GAME:
The game seems to run perfectly in windowed mode and there were no noticeable problems. I chose to turn off the film grain to give the game a crisper, more electric feel.  If you liked the movie Tron (the original or even the re-make) you will enjoy the feel of this game. I just wish someone would re-release Tron 2.0 on Steam – that game was a lot of fun!

PROBLEMS NOTED:
Trying to run Tank Universal full-screen resulted in a blank screen with sound…

Call of Duty 2

On November 20, 2010, in playable games, by Necron99

STATUS: playable Steam Store Page: click here
Wine Versions: 1.3.6 Run: from within Steam + Wine virtual desktop
Windowed: YES Full-screen: no

WINE SETTINGS:
As with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare I had to configure Wine to run a virtual desktop and then launch Steam.

IN-GAME SETTINGS:
I set my graphics to no shadows as with my ATI card it just causes artifacting. Screen resolution was set to 1440×900

RUNNING THE GAME – SINGLE PLAYER:
The game loads fine and everything appears to play fine – I played the first 2 missions without problems. Again, if you experience loss of keyboard input when running games within Wine virtual desktop, ALT+TAB should refocus the game and your keyboard should start working again.

MULTIPLAYER:
I launched multiplayer and logged into an Internet server and everything appeared fine… until I was kicked because Punkbuster failed to initialise… I could only play on non-punkbuster servers only.

PROBLEMS NOTED:
Trying to run COD2 full-screen without a virtual desktop resulted in garbled graphics and was unplayable.

STATUS: playable Steam Store Page: click here
Wine Versions: 1.3.9 Run: from within Steam + Wine virtual desktop
Windowed: yes Full-screen: yes

WINE SETTINGS:
COD4: Modern Warfare will run full-screen or in a virtual desktop. Configure and then launch Steam. No library overrides are required.

IN-GAME SETTINGS:
I set my graphics to medium with no shadows – with ATI cards I notice more artifacting with shadows and lighting effects… now I a have moved to NVIDIA everything looks / runs great!

RUNNING THE GAME – SINGLE PLAYER:
The game runs fine launched from Steam within the virtual desktop. Setting the graphics options were not a problem and everything appeared to work fine. I did notice sometimes when starting a game the keyboard stopped responding. A quick ALT+TAB refocused the desktop and the keyboard started working again.

MULTIPLAYER:
Punkbuster is not Wine friendly so you are limited to playing on NON-PUNKBUSTER enabled servers….

Pacific Storm

On November 13, 2010, in broken games, by Necron99

STATUS: broken Steam Store Page: click here
Wine Version: 1.3.6 (was working) – 1.4-rc1 (broken)
Windowed: no Full-screen:yes

I came back to play this game again and it no longer launches from Steam. The launcher opens then closes with no errors shown

OLD ARTICLE:

RUNNING THE GAME:
Pacific Storm can be launched from within the Steam application. The game loads up ok, though left the top and bottom Gnome panels still show for me. These disappear once I launched a campaign.

To start I played the tutorial campaign. The first thing I noticed was the camera rotate was VERY BAD / CHOPPY – though all other controls appear to work fine.  I played through the first tutorial without any problems.

Will post more once I get a chance to play around with this game more… it seems pretty in depth, and I enjoyed the tutorial so I will probably get back to this one soon…

STATUS: playable Steam Store Page: click here
Wine Version: 1.3.6
Windowed: no Full-screen: yes

RUNNING THE GAME:
Psychonauts launches perfectly from the Steam application. Within minutes I had loaded up my old saved game and everything appeared to play perfectly.

The only problem I have experienced so far was when exiting my game the screen goes blank. Hitting ESC repeatedly closed the game and crashes to the desktop…

Shadowgrounds

On November 13, 2010, in playable games, by Necron99

STATUS: playable Steam Store Page: click here
Wine Version: 1.3.6
Windowed: no Full-screen: yes

RUNNING THE GAME:
Shadowgrounds can be launched from within Steam. As with Shadowgrounds: Survivor, the shadow and lighting effects are distorted on my ATI card, though the game is still very playable. With my NVIDIA G240 I can run Shadowgrounds with all settings maxed without problem.

PROBLEMS NOTED:

  • the camera / character pointing randomly resets itself – have to look into this
