ATI CARDS: poor light rendering, and character models missing / shown as black silhouette outlines.

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing

On November 13, 2010, in playable games, by Necron99

STATUS: playable / some stuttering / freezing Steam Store Page: click here
Wine Version: 1.3.6
Windowed: no Full-screen: yes

RUNNING THE GAME:
The configuration application would not launch from Steam – so I had to manually set the configuration file in the SteamApps > Common > Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing folder.

Once that was done the game launched fine from within Steam – though the intro movies had no sound. Once in the game everything appears to run fine except for some stuttering during races – which may not happen on higher spec machines…

Also once and awhile the game freezes up – though still playable in my book…

NOT TESTED:
– multiplayer

Alien vs. Predator 2010

On November 12, 2010, in playable games, by Necron99

STATUS: playable / low frame-rates Steam Store Page:click here
Wine Version: 1.3.14
Windowed:no Full-screen: yes

WINE CONFIG:
I ran the game without and additional library overrides and in XP Mode.

RUNNING THE GAME:
Alien vs Predator 2010 can be launched from the Steam app. I launched in DirectX 9 mode.

The intro movies played ok and I reached the main game menu fine. I launched the Marine campaign and all videos played through to the start ok.

The first thing I noticed was very low frame rates so I lowered video specs to try and improve performance… The game was barely playable on my GT240 at 1650 x 1050.

Hmm…. the game appears playable on Linux only if you have a really high spec machine… (addendum: specs are probably not the issue = framerate issues need to be explored)

NOT TESTED:

  • all campaigns
  • multiplayer

Company of Heroes

On November 12, 2010, in playable games, by Necron99

STATUS: playable Steam Store Page: click here
Wine Version: 1.3.8
Windowed: no Full-screen: yes

RUNNING THE GAME:
Company of Heroes launched into full-screen mode  from Steam. The intro movies played fine and I could login to my Relic account with no problems.

This game used to randomly crash with my old ATI card – but since switching to NVIDIA this game runs perfect!

Some tweaks to try if you are having problems running Company of Heroes:

– install vcrun2005 vcrun2008 with Winetricks
– set OffscreenRenderingMode to fbo in Wine registry
– override d3dx9_36.dll, ntdll, winsta, faultrep (native, builtin) using winecfg
– rename the RelicDownloader folder to stop it from loading up

Shadowgrounds: Survivor

On November 9, 2010, in playable games, by Necron99

STATUS: playable Steam Store Page: click here
Wine Version: 1.3.6
Windowed: no Full-screen: yes

RUNNING THE GAME:
Shadowgrounds: Survivor launches ok from the Steam app. I first launched the game settings program and set everything to low and turned off all effects to be safe.  The opening movies played fine. After starting a new game and playing for a bit the first thing I noticed is problems with the flashlight beam / shadows.  This may be due to ATI drivers.  While the flashlight issue doesn’t immediately affect gameplay – it may pose problems later in the game in very dark areas!

I exited and changed all settings to very high – except no anti-aliasing and no vertical sync.  This drops frame rates considerably – and while the flashlight glow was there – all lighting shadows had stripes through them… time to find a settings balance for best appearance / gameplay.

The shadow effects are still distorted, though if you don’t use use the flashlight much it’s very playable. For dark areas, just pump up the Gamma ;)

My Final Settings:
Ground Shadows Texture Quality: Very High
Lighting Level: Very Low
Lighting Texture Quality: Very High
Weather Effects: Very High
Shadows Level: Very Low
Misc: Very High
Anisotropic Filtering: 8 Samples
Antialiasing: Disabled
Shadows Texture Quality: Very High
Texture Detail Level: High
ON: Fullscreen, Weather Effects, High Quality Lightmap, Extra Gamma Effects, Render Glow, Distorion Effects, High Quality Video, Reset After Load, Enable Menu Videos

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR)

On November 9, 2010, in playable games, by Necron99

STATUS:Playable Steam Store Page: click here
Wine Version: 1.3.6
Windowed: YES Full-screen:NO<

NOTES:
I had to run KOTOR in Windowed mode in Wine to get it to work. I used winecfg to emulate a virtual-desktop.  You can run the game without virtual desktop mode – though ATI cards seem to have problems. When I try this the game plays in a window anyway…

IN-GAME SETTINGS:
I set the game video resolution to 1024×768 – anything higher caused the screen to go blank for me, though the cursor was visible. This happened even with higher Wine desktop size settings. (ATI Card)
– I also had to turn off “Frame Buffer Effects” and “Soft Shadows” or else the screen flickered so badly it was unplayable.

On my new NVIDIA card I could enable the frame buffer effects + Anti-Aliasing, though soft shadows was not available…

RUNNING THE GAME:
Star Wars: KOTR launches from the Steam client in windowed mode just fine and all videos play though to menus. I started a quick character and was playing in no time. Everything appears to work 100% with the above in-game settings.

King’s Bounty: The Legend

On November 8, 2010, in playable games, by Necron99

STATUS: playable Steam Store Page: click here
Wine Version: 1.3.6
Windowed: no Full-screen: yes

RUNNING THE GAME:
King’s Bounty: The Legend launches fine from within the Steam application. On first run the opening videos were slow and choppy – though setting the game to not use anti-aliasing fixed this issue.  Gameplay was also very slow and choppy until AA was turned off.  Everything else seems to work fine as far as I can tell.

Beat Hazard

On November 8, 2010, in playable games, by Necron99

STATUS: playable Steam Store Page: click here
Wine Version: 1.3.8
Windowed: yes Full-screen: yes

After switching from ATI to NVIDIA this game started working for me.

RUNNING THE GAME:
Beat Hazard launches to full screen or in a virtual desktop window. I used the “V” folder browser to select a song and play a game. Everything appears to run fine.

PROBLEMS NOTED:

  • When selecting a track DO NOT use the “my computer” browser – mine crashes every time. Press “V” to open a file browser window instead.
  • There were some random crashes when loading some songs – think it depends on the song format / encoding settings.
  • When launching into a virtual desktop window the game maximises the window.

STATUS: playable Steam Store Page: click here
Wine Version: 1.3.6
Windowed: no Full-screen:yes

RUNNING THE GAME:

Sacred Gold launches from Steam and plays fine. Have not run into any problems running this game on Linux so far.

People on Wine AppDB having problems playing cinematics have suggested to use native quartz.dll, amstream.dll and devenum.dll
